INTRODUCTION vernacular architecture

The study of identity in architecture, is a phenomenon that is always interesting to be discussed. Not only on the identity of Indonesian architecture, but this identity problem has begun to be questioned on the level of regional architecture. The existence of Vernacular Architecture is a term that relates to the study of discourse in the regional architecture.
Attention to vernacular architecture has begun to develop since the publication of the book "Architecture without Architects", written in 1964 by Bernard Rudofksi. In this book, Rudofski tried to arouse the attention of the observer of architecture by exploiting the existence of a variety of objects that deserve claimed as architecture (an exclusive terminology that is seen to have more value than just "building"), but comes without any professional intervention specialist today we call the nickname architect.
Through his writings, Rudofksi able to show that the common people (who even in the context of sociology classified as a low class society), was able to present the work of architectural quality, both functionally perwadahan, construction techniques and symbolic, even if confronted with conditions of resource availability is very limited .
To further the popularity of the term vernacular architecture increasingly gaining momentum since defined by Amos Rapoport (1982) through differentiation on the present building typologies through a tradition of high-level design and present the folk tradition (folk tradition) ". Distinksi is more commonly known as the dichotomy of "high class low class style vs. style". In the second group, called the building Rapoport primitive and vernacular buildings as part of the primary, while the modern architecture into a case of bad luck for kelompokpertama spe.
Departing from this taxonomy, Rapoport then distinguish vernacular building up "pre-industria vernacular" and "modern vernacular". The first category refers to the fruit of evolution more primitive buildings, while the latter is associated to the communities of the background presence of these vernacular buildings. For Rapoport, design (architecture) vernacular rather an adjustment models with a wider range of individual variation of the primitive buildings.
Vernacular architecture is more qualified and more than that tends to be "open-ended" which connotes open up the possibility of variation according to the conditions of individual / society that present it. In broad outline, Rapoport tend not to give a clear definition of the meaning of vernacular architecture.
Regarding this, he tends to use the term description rather than definition, so he came to the understanding of vernacular architecture in the formulation of a "definition" which he called the "definition politetik".
