DEFINITION OF SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

In the discussion of architecture, sustainable development is a goal that must be achieved. In this case ekoarsitektur / greenarchitecture is one important aspect of the orientation on the nature (ecology) of sustainable development (sustainable development).

Sustainable design (sustainable design) is one part that is overwhelmed by sustainable development (sustainable development). There are plenty of sense development continued. Are well known and often used as a reference is the understanding of the world commision on environtment and development (WCED).

“Sustainable development is develoment that meets and needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”.

While other definitions of sustainable development are as follows :

“Sustainable development means improving the quality of life while living within the carrying capacity of supporting ecosystems”; World Conservation Union, UN Environment Programme and World Wide Fund For Nature (1991), dalam Okta Zaida Ratnasari.
“Sustainable development is development that delivers basic environmental, social and economic services to all residents of a community without threatening the viability of the  natural, built and social system upon which the delivery of these services depends”; International Council For Local Environtmental Initiatives (1994), dalam Okta Zaida Ratnasari.

ASPECTS OF SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
In the Brundtland Report submitted by the WCED there are many aspects to consider. Various kinds of essence then proposed by the experts. Three fundamental components proposed by Peter Kydd (Employee of Parsons Brickenchoff, Bristol, UK in the NT Networks Issues No. 59, in a Okta Zaida Ratnasari 2006) based on the Brundtland Report adalahenvironmental protection, economic growth and social equity. While John Elkington (Founder of Sustain Ability, UK Environment Data Organization and Environmental Data Services Ltd (ENDS), in a Okta Zaida Ratnasari 2006) underlines the balance of three things: economic development, environmental protection, and social well being. 
Formas, the Swedish research institute Okta Zaida Ratnasari 2006 bnyak give more explanation of the concept model of sustainable development, namely:
1.        The pillars, economic sustainability, ecological, and social described as the three pillars that support the sustainable society.



2.       The circle, the sustainability of the economic, ecological, and social depicted as circles overlap in part with sustainability (sustainability) as a state in its midst.

 3.        Economy 
        Hall and Pfeiffer 2000, stated that the biggest problem in dealing with urban settlements is the lack of economic resources to lead lives worthy of (decent) and satisfying (satisfying). Further explained that the main way to tackle poverty in the countries which are now the developed countries with economic growth (economic growth).

4.        Social 
      Social sustainability is the aspect of sustainable development which has been difficult to measure because it is not quantitative. Social sustainability is influenced by humans as a community supporter. Hall and Pfeiffer 2000, stated that individual preferences, lifestyle, and activity patterns inherited values ​​will affect social behavior and social fabric.

Vancouver city government this outlines the social sustainability in four main principles, namely: 
a. equity, individuals have access to participate fully in their communities,      either for self-development as well as the participation and collaboration       of the 
b. social inclusion and interaction, the existence of the right and the               opportunity to participate and interact responsibly towards the community 
c. security, economic security reinforces the belief that they live in an               environment that is safe, supportive, and healthy 
d. adaptability, flexibility for both individuals and communities are taking         the right and changed everything creatively.
5.        Ecology 
    Ecological aspect is an aspect that many highlighted when talking about sustainable design. This is because these aspects directly related to the natural factors that exist in the earth beneath us this. So things that show a clear degradation of the environment looks and feels. The ecological aspect is described in the discussion for the rest ekoarsitekur (greenarchitecture) as described in the previous section.
